THE CONSERVATION STUDIO
was established in 2004, when the partners merged their respective professional practices.
The partners had met when the studios they worked in at the time collaborated on a large project at
Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, and married in 2001.
Based initially in Gullane, East Lothian, and later at Balcarres Street, Edinburgh, they moved to the
present premises in 2004. The studio has been altered and refurbished to accommodate paintings
of all dimensions, and is fully equipped to offer a comprehensive conservation service.
SALLY CHEYNE MA ACR
gained a post-graduate qualification in Conservation of Easel Paintings from Gateshead (now the
University of Northumbria) in 1990, following a first class degree in Fine Art from Gray’s School of
Art, Aberdeen. She has worked in Rome and in Dublin, and for two years as a Painting Conservator
at Historic Scotland’s Stenhouse Conservation Centre. Sally had a long association as a freelence
conservator with Clare Meredith’s Hopetoun studio, before setting up her own practice in 1999.
She gained her ICON accreditation in 2004.
Tragically, Sally died suddenly in September 2015, but her legacy remains in the many works in
public and private collections that she worked on, and in the professionalism and high standards
she fostered at The Conservation Studio.
OWEN DAVISON MA
graduated with an MA in Fine Art from Edinburgh University and trained in painting restoration
at Parkes & Bordone in Edinburgh. He has worked for Historic Scotland’s Stenhouse Conservation
Centre and as a freelance for Glasgow Museums. For the National Trust of Scotland, he was
closely involved in the presentation of Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson’s interiors at Holmwood House
and in research at Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House. He set up his private practice in 1997.
Owen is also a practising painter, with a particular interest in traditional techniques, and in 2011
created the devotional altarpiece for the Queen’s Inner Chamber at the Palace Project, Stirling Castle.
Owen works for the National Galleries of Scotland as a member of their Professional Register, and has
featured in BBC4's series Britain's Lost Masterpieces.
Since Sally's death he has continued the studio practice alone.
